Awkwafina, who plays Shang-Chi’s best friend Katy, praises her stunt double in a behind-the-scenes photo from Shang-Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Awkwafina praises her stunt woman in a behind-the-scenes image from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The second film in Marvel’s phase 4 was released exclusively in theaters over Labor Day Weekend and by all critical and commercial accounts, it appears to be another successful entry into the MCU. The film has been sitting pretty in the 90% range on Rotten Tomatoes since its release. In addition, Shang-Chi set a new Labor Day record, raking in $90 million over the four-day holiday weekend, an impressive sum even by pre-pandemic standards.
Shang-Chi tells the story of Simu Liu’s titular character who runs away from his father’s criminal organization to live a peaceful life as a parking valet in San Francisco. There, he befriends his co-worker, Katy (Awkwafina), who is unaware of his past, but soon gets caught up in his complicated relationship with his father, Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung), who possesses the mystical weapons known as the ten rings. Shang-Chi’s mother, Ying Li (Fala Chen), estranged sister, Xu Xialing (Meng’er Zhang), and aunt Ying Nan (Michelle Yeoh) also play important roles in his story as well.
Now that Shang-Chi is playing in theaters, Awkwafina took to Instagram to thank everyone who went to see the Marvel movie. The actress also took the opportunity to include a behind-the-scenes photo of her and her stunt woman, Lee Chesley, and praised her work on the film, along with “badass stunt women everywhere.” Check out the BTS photo below:

Stunt people are oftentimes more imperative to creating a film’s action sequences than the actual stars themselves, so it’s nice to see Awkwafina giving credit where it is due. This seems to be a recent trend for MCU stars as Black Widow‘s Florence Pugh and David Harbour also took to social media to thank the stuntwomen who worked on the film. Loki‘s Sophia Di Martino did the same for her stunt double on the Disney+ series.
Simi Liu did a lot of his own stunts on Shang-Chi but is surely grateful for all the work his stunt doubles, Brandon Holam Lee and Jesse Turner, did on the film. Of all the new characters introduced in Shang-Chi, Awkwafina’s Katy seems most likely to appear again alongside the film’s titular hero. Shang-Chi‘s ending and mid-credits scene are likely setting the two up for an appearance in Doctor Strange 2 but due to Katy’s newfound archery skills, she could be seen before that in Hawkeye.
