Will Ferrell wants football tournament with Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham team

COMEDIAN Will Ferrell has thrown down the gauntlet to Wrexham AFC to take part in a three-team tournament with LA FC and television’s Ted Lasso’s team.

Last week, Wrexham AFC co-owner Ryan Reynolds said he hoped to bring the Anchorman star to The Racecourse on one of his next visits.

At a press conference at The Racecourse last week, the Canadian superstar said: “I would love to get Will Ferrell here, he’s a pal and a fan and I’ve just finished working with him, so I’d really like to get him here to the Racecourse.”

Ferrell, who trained to be a sports commentator before switching to comedy, is a part owner of LA FC, the Major League Soccer outfit managed by Bob Bradley in California.

Recently, he got to commentate on a match and said he considered himself “a catalyst” in Ryan wanting to complete the takeover of Wrexham AFC with It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia creator Rob McElhenney.

Will and Ryan are also friends of Jason Sudeikis, star of the hit comedy Ted Lasso.

A recent episode of the show made a joke about Ryan and Rob’s commitment to Wrexham AFC, leading to a good-natured twitter exchange and a delivery of biscuits to The Racecourse by way of an apology.

At the time, Ryan and Rob tweeted: “It has come to our attention that in a recent episode of Ted Lasso, our very real ownership of Wrexham AFC was called into question by an otherwise beloved character named ‘Higgins’.

“While we hold the incomparable Jeremy Swift in no ill regard and are honoured to be mentioned on the platform that brought us high-quality programming ranging from Mythic Quest season one and Mythic Quest season two, we must insist that you cease and desist from the casting of any doubt regarding our commitment to the club, the fans and the entire Wrexham community.”

During the commentary, Will, who recently appeared in a TikTok doing the Grace Kelly challenge with Ryan, said he would like to see a tournament featuring the three teams, despite one of them being fictional.

Ferrell, 54, told Sky Sports: “I think I’m a catalyst in that regard. I think Ted (Lasso)’s team, Ryan (Reynolds)’s team and LA FC should all try to play each other in some way – like a three-team tournament.”

Ryan and Will are due to co-star in the film, Spirited, described as a modern musical reimagining of Charles Dickens’ 1843 seasonal classic A Christmas Carol.

Ryan, reportedly playing Scrooge, and Ferrell star along with Octavia Spencer and Sunita Mani.
