Idris Elba & Daniela Melchior Hang Out In Suicide Squad BTS Set Photo

Idris Elba and Daniela Melchior hang out in a behind-the-scenes photo from the set of The Suicide Squad. Known for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, writer/director James Gunn’s entry into the DCEU was released this past summer on August 6. While it failed to make its budget back at the box office, its R rating and release amidst concerns about the COVID-19 Delta variant could have prevented it from reaching a larger audience.

The Suicide Squad was a huge streaming hit on HBO Max and widely praised by critics and audiences for improving upon its 2016 predecessor from director David Ayer. Gunn’s version brings back a few characters from that film, such as Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). Viola Davis returns as Amanda Waller to assemble a new Task Force lineup that includes some notable newcomers like Elba’s Bloodsport and Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2, while others like T.D.K. (Nathan Fillion), Javelin (Flula Borg), and Mongal (Mayling Ng) prove to be nothing more than cannon fodder in the mission to destroy the mysterious Project Starfish.

Now, James Gunn is sharing yet another look behind the scenes of his latest film. The photo, recently shared on his active Twitter account, shows Idris Elba and Daniela Melchior resting in between takes on the Jotunheim set in Atlanta, Georgia, where one of the final action sequences was filmed. Bloodsport and Ratcatcher 2, also known as Robert DuBois and Cleo Cazo, respectively, are surprisingly the emotional core of the film considering the father-daughter like relationship they developed during their mission. Over time, Ratcatcher 2 helps Bloodsport conquer his fear of rats born out of abuse he suffered from his father as a child, eventually petting Cleo’s pet rat Sebastian as they leave Corto Maltese on a helicopter, a sign he’s ready to reconcile with his troubled past.

Given Bloodsport and Ratcatcher 2 are two of only five Task Force X members left alive at the end of the film, they could be primed for major roles in future installments if they ever come to fruition. Gunn has expressed interest in making another DC movie, though he’s said it will be completely unexpected, suggesting it’s likely not a followup to The Suicide Squad. If Warner Bros. is interested in bringing back the surviving characters to complete their arcs, they could hire another filmmaker for the threequel. One surviving member of Task Force X who will definitely be returning is John Cena’s Peacemaker, whose self-titled spinoff series is coming to HBO Max early next year.
