Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Director Has Funny Response to Cast’s Reaction to Script

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn reacts to stars Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff crying while reading his script.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn hilariously reacts to stars Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff crying while reading his script. With the recently-released The Suicide Squad and HBO Max’s upcoming spin-off series Peacemaker, Gunn has cemented his place as a superhero cinema aficionado. Following his momentary firing by Disney and his foray into the DCEU, Gunn is now back working with Marvel Studios on the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the long-awaited third entry in his Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was supposed to help kick off Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the aforementioned firing (as well as the pandemic) has resulted in the movie’s release date being pushed to 2023. In addition to saying the film will likely be his last Marvel film, Gunn has teased Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will wrap up his take on the Guardians of the Galaxy. That being said, Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula in the MCU, talked about her experience reading the film’s script with Pom Klementieff (Mantis), calling it “so emotional” and saying there were “floods of tears.”

Gunn recently shared his reaction to Gillan and Klementieff’s take on his script on Twitter. The writer/director poked fun at their tears, saying he hopes they weren’t crying because they thought their parts would be bigger. Check it out below:

Gunn is very active on social media and often interacts with fans. On top of opening up about how Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will likely have some cameo from The Suicide Squad actors, similar to how Klementieff made a surprise appearance in the latter, Gunn recently shared a photo of a stack of storyboards for the upcoming film. Anticipation for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is building rapidly, and reports of an emotional script are only adding to it. Gunn has even said in the past that he cried a lot while writing it, which he finished back in 2019. After his “firing,” the studio still wanted to use his script, indicating the high quality of Gunn’s work.

Gunn has hinted at a major death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Dave Bautista has already said that the film will be his last time playing Drax, but Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Kraglin (Sean Gunn), Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), Mantis, Rocket Racoon (voice of Bradley Cooper), and Nebula are all fair game. There is already ample speculation that the movie will explore some of Rocket’s origin story, setting up his eventual death. As mentioned by Gunn, Nebula, who has arguably undergone some of the most dramatic growth in the MCU, supposedly has a huge role in the third film, and her death may have provoked Gillian’s emotional reaction. Regardless, with a May 2023 release date, fans have plenty of time to stock up on tissues.
