Elle Fanning transforms into Michelle Carter of ‘texting-suicide’ case on The Girl From Plainville

Elle Fanning has been pictured on the set of her upcoming true crime series The Girl From Plainville on Georgia’s Tybee Island for the first time.

The 23-year-old actress was seen outdoors as she and her costar Colton Ryan, 26, rode bikes around the island town for a scene.

Elle stars in the Hulu series as Michelle Carter, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2017 for urging her boyfriend to kill himself in text messages in 2014.

In photos from the set, Elle can be seen taking a relaxing cruise on a white bike with a basket while wearing a plunging pink spaghetti strap dress that was ruched around the bust and decorated with colorful floral designs.

She had a matching floral halter bikini top on underneath and a set of simple brown flip flops.

The Great star completed her costume with some vibrant beaded bracelets on one wrist, and she wore her long hair swept back.

Elle usually sports lighter locks, but she had them darkened to a strawberry blond to better approximate Carter’s look.

Although she already bore a striking resemblance to the convicted criminal, the Somewhere star had also darkened her eyebrows to match Carter’s recognizable visage.

In addition to starring as Carter, Elle is also a producer on her new series.

Also joining Elle on set was her costar Colton, who plays Carter’s boyfriend Conrad Henri Roy III.

The actor complemented his costar’s summery attire with a teal T-shirt and jean shorts, as well as red trainers.

He was seen riding just behind Elle, and later she was seen getting a big laugh out of him while they chatted after she dismounted.

Colton plays Conrad Henri Roy III, a Massachusetts-born 18-year-old who died by suicide on July 13, 2014.

Although he and Carter lived just over 30 miles apart near Boston, the two met while both were visiting Florida in 2012.

The two carried on a relationship via text from that point on despite rarely seeing each other, even though they lived within an hour’s drive.

Although Carter referred to herself as Roy’s girlfriend, he didn’t use that terminology and only referred to her as a friend.

After Roy began sharing his suicidal thoughts with Carter later in 2012, she initially tried to convince him that he ‘so much to live for,’ according to the New York Times.

She urged him to seek professional help in June 2014, when he again told Carter that he was thinking of killing himself.

But just a month later, she began sending him text messages urging him to kill himself and trying to convince him that his family and friends would eventually accept his death.

‘Everyone will be sad for a while but they will get over it and move on,’ she wrote in a text message shared in court.

Although Carter’s defense blamed her text messages on mental changes brought about by a new anti-depressant she had begun taking for, she was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentence to two-and-a-half years in prison.

Carter was released three months early in January 2020 due to good conduct.

Elle was also spotted wearing a pair of white bunny ears on set during a lighter moment.

The set’s Southern setting might indicate that the actors were filming the initial meeting between Carter and Roy, which originally took place in Florida.

Although Elle and Colton were seen without masks on, the rest of the crew appeared to be masked up.

Elle’s latest series continues her work with Hulu, which has also released her acclaimed comedy series The Great, in which she stars as the Russian empress Catherine the Great.

Nicholas Hoult costars as her husband Peter III.

Filming for season two of The Great finished up in July, and it’s set to return to the streamer on November 19.

Colton Ryan was recently seen in the critically derided musical adaptation Dear Evan Hansen, in which he plays a high schooler who kills himself, leading the title character (played by Ben Platt) to lie that the two had been friends prior to his death.

Elle has been keeping busy by releasing multiple film projects per year recently.

In 2019 she appeared in the controversial Woody Allen comedy A Rainy Day In New York opposite Timothee Chalamet, and the same year she played opposite Angelina Jolie in the Disney film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil as Princess Aurora.

Last year, she starred in the Sally Potter drama The Roads Not Taken with Javier Bardem and Salma Hayek, which divided critics, and she starred in and produced the Netflix romcom All The Bright Places.
