A spacious garden with a private beach and 5-star comfort – that is what the Eden Roc in Ascona promises. After our visit to the Valsana Hotel in Arosa last year, we scouted the Eden Roc, another member of the Tschuggen Hotel Group. From this stay we not only brought a glimpse into the newly designed suites, but also show you how to enjoy the Dolcefarniente to the full during a short break on Lake Maggiore.
Traumlage am Lake Maggiore
The origins of the Eden Roc go back to 1971. The hotel opens in the decade of flashy fashion and punk. While the building is still reminiscent of the “unadorned” hotel buildings of classic European summer vacation spots at first glance, the Eden Roc has been gradually transformed into the top luxury resort in Switzerland since it was taken over by the Kipp-Bechtolsheimer family in 1989 and is now a member at the Leading Hotels on the World.
Especially in the current situation, where the travel options are limited per se or you might want to treat yourself to the feeling of a beach holiday for a few days without having to accept long travel times, the Eden Roc offers its extensive gardens including a private beach , two outdoor pools, various lounge corners and cozy retreats provide the perfect framework. During the first tour of the garden, I fell in love with the large swing suspended between two mighty chestnut trees and enjoyed a wonderfully relaxed afternoon in it.
A break to recharge your batteries
In addition to the large garden area, which extends between the two main buildings (the neighboring Eden Lac has also been part of the resort since 2000) and the historic La Casetta lake house and directly connects to the Ascona promenade, the Eden Roc also knows with the unconventional- colorful interior design by the house designer Carlo Rampazzi.
The interior designer from Ticino, who plays a leading role in furnishing all of the Tschuggen Hotel Group’s properties, has also designed the latest 20 rooms and suites. During our stay, we will spend the night in one of these new Comfort Suites, which have separate living and sleeping areas and are designed so that they can also be used as family rooms (2 double beds). In addition to the fact that a nice welcome awaits us in the room, the free minibar (with a really great selection of mostly local drinks) and the fantastic light-flooded bathroom are also worth mentioning.
The Tschuggen Hotel Group has various sustainability projects underway and has been operating its hotels in a climate-neutral manner on the basis of a collaboration with myclimate since 2019. When looking from the balcony towards Lake Maggiore, due to the slightly set back location of our room, I immediately notice a possible optimization point in terms of sustainability. The 1970s building does not yet have a green roof. Who knows, maybe one of the future projects will tackle the green roof.
The agony of choice
The concept of sustainability has already established itself in the kitchen of the Eden Roc and accordingly plant-based dishes can be found on each of the four restaurant menus. In «La Brezza», which has been awarded 17 GaultMillau points and one Michelin star, there is also a full vegetarian menu to choose from. We would have loved to taste Marco Campanella’s culinary art – but he was still on his well-deserved vacation during our stay in the first half of April. We experienced a positive surprise at «La Marina» – we were delighted with the fresh, oriental-inspired menu and, above all, the wonderful presentation of the dishes.
Actively explore the area around Ascona
A rich breakfast is essential to start an active day at the Eden Roc. In addition to the buffet (which is served due to the current situation) there is a selection of fine à la carte dishes.
The hotel is in a great location for exploring the surrounding area of Ascona and Monte Verità on foot. I have already published a selection of hiking tips for the region in this post. This time we did a nice hike from the hotel to Arcegno and back. The hiking route and key data of the tour can be found at the end of the article. After more than 20 years, the ship went to the Brissago Islands again. For explorations in the area or excursions to Centovalli, Maggia Valley or Verzasca Valley, the Eden Roc provides its hotel guests with bicycles, e-bikes, an e-smart and the Gandria fishing boat free of charge.
And if you return to the hotel after an active day, you shouldn’t miss a trip to the spa. I find the Kneipp pool with stones from the Maggia particularly successful.
Practical tips for your vacation in Ascona
The previous lines suggest – we really enjoyed our stay at the Eden Roc and yes, I could easily have spent two or three more days dangling between the chestnut trees. And since a meal at La Brezza is still on our bucket list, there is guaranteed to be a reunion one day. If you feel like spending a few days of vacation in Ascona, I have put together a few more practical tips below:
- The Eden Roc has various room categories to choose from and the prices vary depending on the season and category. Comfort double rooms start at around 420 CHF per night including breakfast. The prices for the Comfort Suite start at around 890 CHF.
- In addition to the possibility of using various means of transport (bikes, e-smart, fishing boats) free of charge on site, guests also receive the Ticino Ticket, with which they can use public transport throughout the canton of Ticino for free during their stay.
- The Eden Roc offers its guests the option of a Resort Dine Around for 70 CHF per person per day.
- The 7-kilometer obstacle-free Giro Lungolago Ascona hiking trail passes by the hotel (is also suitable for pushchairs).
- Ascona’s shipping pier is within walking distance of the hotel. From here you can reach the Brissago Islands and the opposite Riviera del Gambarogno by boat in 15 minutes.
- We also recommend a detour to Intragna in Centovalli – either on foot or with the Vigezzina-Centovalli train.
- You can find even more regional excursion ideas in my blog post with 13 promising Ticino excursion destinations.
Wandertipp Ascona – Monte Verità – Arcegno – Ascona
The following map shows the route of the hike from Ascona to Arcegno and back mentioned in this article. An entertaining three-hour circular hike (9.6 kilometers / 445 vertical meters ascent) that can be combined as a half-day excursion with a stroll through Ascona.
Note: our stay in Ascona was supported by the Eden Roc. Thank you for that. All opinions and impressions are ours.
