Jennifer Lopez admits she feels like an ‘outsider’ in Hollywood

Jennifer Lopez is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, but the multi-talented star has admitted to feeling like an ‘outsider’ in the industry.

Speaking in a new video shared on her JLO BEAUTY Instagram page on Thursday, the 52-year-old confessed that she has never felt like she ‘belonged in Hollywood’ – despite appearing in multiple critically acclaimed films.

Wearing a figure-hugging yellow dress, the actress and singer was speaking with her online fans about the importance of Latin women becoming leaders.

The Jenny From the Block hitmaker was talking as a part of a campaign with cosmetics company Sephora to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

The star candidly admitted to still feeling like an outsider in the movie business

In the inspirational footage, the award-winning star proudly declared fellow Latinas to be ‘fearless and powerful’ and able to ‘accomplish anything they set their minds to’, as she opened up to her company’s 715,000 followers.

Towards the end of the three minute, 38 second long clip, the mum-of-two revealed that despite her huge global success, she still suffers from imposter syndrome.

“I think for me, I know it is important for all of us to feel like we belong, um, and like most people there’s so many times in your life when you feel like an outsider, I feel like that in Hollywood sometimes,” Jennifer exclaimed in the short clip.

“I still feel that way,” she added, hinting she doesn’t feel respected as an actress.

“But the truth is you just need your little tribe. I believe we all have this limitless power inside of us that makes us unstoppable.”

She concluded on a motivational note, saying: “The only way to feel truly beautiful is to accept yourself for who you are.”

The star appeared in Out of Sight alongside George Clooney early on in her career

Jennifer breakthrough acting role was the title role in the Selena biopic of the same name in March 1997.

Since then, the Bronx-born star has appeared in over thirty box office smash hits – with several of her films impressing both critics and fans.

Perhaps her most notable recent performance was that of con-artist and stripper Ramona in 2019 crime comedy-drama film, Hustlers.

Despite an Oscar buzz surrounding the star following her portrayal of the straight-talking ringleader, Jennifer was overlooked when it came to awards season.

The snub is something the actress has admitted left her ‘sad’ after such a build up.

In May 2020, she told Oprah Winfrey : “I felt like I let everyone down a little bit. I was sad. I was a little sad because there was a lot of buildup to it.

There were so many articles, I got so many good notices — more than ever in my career — and there was a lot of: “She’s going to get nominated for an Oscar, it’s going to happen; if it doesn’t you’re crazy.”

I’m reading all the articles going: “Oh my God, could this happen?” And then it didn’t and I was like: “Ouch.” It was a little bit of a letdown.”

The Oscars nods that year instead went to Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit), Florence Pugh (Little Women), Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), Margot Robbie (Bombshell), and Laura Dern (Marriage Story), who won.

Despite not impressing The Academy that year, Jennifer did receive multiple other awards for her turn in Hustlers.

Amongst many other accolades, the actress took home the Best Supporting Actress gong from the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association, and Best Supporting Female at from the Online Association of Female Film Critics.
