Idris Elba, who portrays Asgardian gatekeeper Heimdall in the MCU, suggests that “everything is possible” and that his character could return.
Idris Elba, who portrays Asgardian gatekeeper Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thinks that his character still exists, suggesting that he could return to the MCU at some point in the future. Heimdall is the powerful, all-seeing guardian of Asgard’s Bifrost, connecting him to the Nine Realms and giving him the ability to transport Thor and many other Asgardians across the galaxy. Elba has portrayed Heimdall in five MCU films over the years, starting with 2011’s Thor.
The Asgardian gatekeeper played a significant role in Thor: Ragnarok; Heimdall protected the citizens of Asgard from the wrath of Hela (Cate Blanchett), aiding Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in evacuating them to safety aboard the Grandmaster’s stolen spaceship. However, in the opening sequence of Avengers: Infinity War, Heimdall was killed by Thanos (Josh Brolin) after channeling the Bifrost in order to send Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to Earth. Unlike those who were dusted as part of the snap, Heimdall’s death appeared pretty final, and Elba previously stated in 2018 that he had “no idea” if he would play the character again.
Now, Elba has a much more hopeful outlook on the possibility of Heimdall’s return to the MCU. In an interview with ET (via ComicBook) as part of The Suicide Squad press tour, the actor stated that “everything is possible” in the superhero genre. He went on to affirm his love for playing Heimdall, calling him an “amazing character.” Read his full quote below:
“I think the constraints of the sort of superhero universe are none, so everything is possible. I think that Heimdall is an amazing character and still exists.”
As a result of Loki’s recent season finale, there are certainly a lot fewer constraints on the MCU after Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie kickstarted the multiverse. The direction Phase Four appears to be heading in leaves the door open for any previously deceased character to return. Furthermore, Elba has expressed his interest in reprising the role before, and images of the actor with Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi have fuelled speculation that Heimdall will make an appearance in the upcoming Thor sequel.
Elba himself even potentially hinted that Heimdall was only “seemingly” dead in Infinity War, so his thoughts that the Asgardian still exists does suggest that fans haven’t seen the last of Heimdall in the MCU just yet. Though little is still known about the details of the plot, Thor: Love and Thunder promises to be weirder and zanier than the first three Thor films combined. It’s clear now that anything is possible in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s looking more and more likely that Heimdall could make an epic return in Thor: Love and Thunder.
