what was the character you left acting for

There are characters that mark some acting careers. For Daniel Day-Lewis it was much more than that: there was one that directly determined his retirement from the cinema.

The British actor played what was his last role in The invisible thread, just released and available on Netflix. The film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was made in 2017.

The reason for completely departing from the profession that led him to stardom was given by himself when he said that the character of Reynolds Woodcock, the designer he plays in The invisible thread, caused him a very deep depression.

In Anderson’s film, Day-Lewis takes on the role of a 1950s London haute couture designer, trapped between his professional success and his existential emptiness.

The same actor admitted that, although he had been filming sporadically and lately he let a couple of years pass between film and film, before The invisible son he did not have in mind to leave the profession.

In one of the few interviews he gave months after it was concluded, to the magazine W Magazine, the actor assured: “At the end, both Paul (the director) and I were flooded by a huge feeling of sadness, which took us by surprise. Until that moment, neither of us were aware of what we had created. It was hard and still is, “he said then.

And he assured that he also made the decision not to see the film (which was nominated for six Oscars and won one) for the same reason.

Throughout his life, Daniel Day-Lewis was known for being an anti-star. And despite being considered one of the most talented actors of his generation, he never behaved like almost all the rest of his colleagues.

In case anyone had doubts about the attitude of not filming again, he clarified: “All my life I talked about how I should stop acting, but now it’s different. The decision has taken root in me, becoming almost a compulsion. I don’t want to. get sucked into another project. ” That’s how emphatic he was.

The deepest reason has to do with the way in which Day-Lewis always approached his work, committing himself to his roles in an obsessive, almost sickly way, but which earned him the recognition of the whole world.

For example, to understand the character of My left Foot (1989), who tells the story of a young man with cerebral palsy, Day-Lewis spent the entire shoot, including during breaks between scenes, in a wheelchair.

But it was not the only time. In order to The last of the mohicans (1992), more than once the technicians could not find him when they were about to film because he would go, without warning, into the forest for hours.

Something similar happened when he filmed In the name of the Father (1993), spending whole days in a cell, outside of filming hours, just like his character.

Born in April 1957, in London, Day-Lewis belongs to a family of artists. With a film producer grandfather, a poet father, and an actress mother, Daniel began studying acting at a young age.

But after a career that included all kinds of diverse characters and all the possible awards with titles like The Age of Innocence, Gangs of New York, Bloody Oil Y Lincoln, the actor preferred to stay away from the sets.

Long before this final retirement, several times, Day-Lewis put his acting career on hiatus to devote himself to other things. Before dedicating himself to the profession, he tried the office of cabinetmaker and later, at 45, he went five years without filming.

During this period, He went to live in Italy, to learn the trade of artisan shoemaker. Day-Lewis found out who made the shoes that he usually bought in a London store and thus found the workshop of a teacher in the city of Florence.

And there he settled for a time, changing the sets for the shoemaker’s workshop, with whom he became friends.

“I only act when I have the internal need to do so, when a kind of compulsion assures me that it is time to play someone else,” he said at the time. “Not acting is much more useful to me later for when I act again; it makes my performance more realistic.”

Always far from Hollywood, he has lived in Ireland for several years. Together with his family, he is installed in Wicklow, a wooded town an hour from Dublin, where he leads a life like that of any other inhabitant of the place.

After your participation in In the name of the Father, where he played Gerry Conlon, an icon of the fight for Northern Ireland. that country granted him his citizenship.

At age 63, He has been married 24 to director and producer Rebecca Miller, the daughter of Arthur Miller, one of the most important playwrights of the 20th century. With her he had two children. And he has another from a previous relationship with French actress Isabelle Adjani, with whom at the time the relationship ended in scandal.

After his character as a couturier in The invisible thread, some sources assure that Day-Lewis reinvented himself, once again, with a profession far from stardom, this time with sewing.
