Without a doubt, one of the best and most emblematic animation movies from Pixar is the ‘Toy Story’ saga, in which the toys of a boy named Andy (later they would be little Bonnie’s) came to life and had great adventures. In them, nostalgic people from the 70s, 80s and 90s remember great toys from our childhood, such as Mr. Potato, the soldiers, the dog with a spring, the telephone with colored keys, Barbie, etc.
Who knows if a little in line with this or, simply, because there are many of us who remember how much fun we had with all of them, it seems that the cinema is looking back at those toys. On the one hand, Greta Gerwig (‘Little Women’) will direct to Margot Robbie (‘Suicide Squad’) in a movie about Barbie with a script by Noah Baumbach (‘Story of a marriage’).
On the other, the personal project of Lena Dunham about another of our favorite dolls of the time, Polly Pocket. The creator and screenwriter of ‘Girls’ will write and produce a film about Polly Pocket with her company Good Thing Going. Also Mattel Films, the motion picture division of the toy company, is working with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on the film, while Lily Collins (‘Emily in Paris’) will be the young woman who befriends the toy.
For now we do not know much more detail, and even the project does not appear on IMDb, but nevertheless we do know some information that has been shared by the specialized film media and Dunham herself, who a few days ago broke the news on her Instagram profile: ‘Polly Pocket’ is a completely personal project of hers.
How did ‘Polly Pocket’ come about?
We found out about the project recently with an Instagram post shared by Lily Collins herself. In it, she was seen as a child wearing a Polly Pocket backpack and in the text she conveyed her enthusiasm to immerse herself in this world again. What memories!

“Little Lil, there is good news. As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pocket, it is a true dream come true to announce this project! I have joined the most inspiring team – Robbie Brenner, @lenadunham, @mattel and @ mgmstudios – to reintroduce to Polly in the world in a fun and modern way … bringing these little toys to the big screen. I’m so excited to be involved as a producer and as Polly. I can’t wait to immerse myself in this world of pastel colors … “, explained.
On the other hand, Lena Dunham has given some guidelines of what she expects from this special film for her: “Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childish escapism for me. Polly gave me a little world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s quite poetic to tackle these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel, and MGM.
I am so excited to be able to realize my love for this historic property and also my deeply held belief that young women need smart, funny movies that speak to them without condescension. “
Do we have a plot, trailer, release date …?
For the moment we don’t have more details of the film or the synopsis, except that it will deal with the friendship between a young woman and her doll.
Do you remember Polly Pocket?
To be fair, we shouldn’t be so nostalgic when talking about Polly Pocket, because she’s more alive than ever. As we can read on their website, Polly Pocket “She is a clever and curious inventor who is always looking for adventure. One day he discovers that, thanks to the magic pendant he inherited from his grandmother, it can decrease in size. “
We all knew her as the smallest doll in the world and what attracted children were the tiny houses and businesses she had. It was created by toymaker Chris Wiggs in 1989 and shortly after, Mattel bought the brand and massively distributed the doll, becoming one of the most important children’s products of the early 90s, with books, TV series …
