Kirkman has admitted that with sales increasing and the idea of surpassing volume 12, he had room to tell a longer story about Carl’s revenge.
Madrid, January 31 (Europa Press) .- It is no secret that Robert Kirkman planned to kill Rick Grimes on The Walking Dead long before what finally happened in the comics. The creator has revealed that one of his initial ideas was to end the character, so that Carl would become the protagonist and face Shane.
Shane was upset by the return of Rick, since it maintained a relation with Lori, his wife. While attacking Rick, Carl came out of nowhere and shot him, thus saving his father. But as Kirkman details in the new deluxe edition of the comic, his idea was for Rick to die to put Carl and Shane at the center of the plot.
Kirkman has admitted that with sales increasing and the idea of surpassing volume 12, he had room to tell a longer story about Carl’s revenge. His alternate plan was for Carl to get lost in the woods, seeing Shane just as he was killing Rick. He would witness Rick’s murder but he would not tell anyone and he would end up taking revenge in the future.
“Carl was too scared to tell Lori what he saw, fearing Shane would kill Lori too,” confirms Kirkman in the Letters section. And Shane wouldn’t have known Carl had seen it. So there would have been a lot of tense moments between them. Shane would have been the first great real villain of the comic, and he would have been with the group, on the same side as them, the enemy sleeping next door, “he explained.
Although this idea could have worked in the comics, it would have been difficult to carry it out on television. From the first moment the series told the story from the point of view of Rick, who became the leader of the survivors and one of the favorite characters of the fans. So much so that, after his departure in the ninth season, the character of Andrew Lincoln will star in a trilogy of films that will tell his story after being rescued by a CRM helicopter.
