Judi Dench can no longer read the scripts or see the people in front of her

Judi Dench, one of the most endearing interpreters of British cinema and theater, is still at the foot of the canyon at 86 years old, having made her film debut half a century ago. Neither age nor his ailments prevented him from contouring and singing in the adaptation of Cats to the movies, a year and months ago.

But the problem he suffers in his eyesight has brought him consequences, such as can no longer read the scripts.

The actress, nominated seven times for the Oscar awards, has been receiving treatment for a degenerative visual disease that prevents him from reading the scripts for years, he does not contemplate abandoning his career, as he stated at a charity event of the Vision Foundation organization, in which he has appeared along with his fellow professionals Stephen Fry and Hayley Mills.

“I have had to find another way to learn lines and dialogue: great friends of mine repeat them to me over and over again, so I have to learn by repetition and I just hope that people do not realize it if all the lines are absolutely desperate, “Judi Dench acknowledged about how her blindness causes added difficulty to her profession, making it impossible for her to read the scripts of the films in which she works.

However, his degenerative disease helps him get to know the people with whom he shares scenes better. “During the quarantine, I made a movie and I spoke to people who were wearing masks during rehearsals, nothing to do with any scene I’m in. It’s something exquisite if you can do that and that’s the good side of all this, and you have to look at the good, “Dench said.

Her career is impeccable: as a good Shakespearean lady, in theater she was Ophelia in Hamlet, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth.

Already a few years ago, in an interview, Dench had said that the age-related disease, called macular degeneration, has caused him the loss of part of his vision and that it prevents him from reading movie scripts or seeing people sitting in front of him. her.

Now he has wanted to silence the voices that reported about his blindness: “In response to the numerous rumors and articles in the media about my disease, I do not want this to be exaggerated,” said the actress at the time, in a statement sent to the agency Reuters.

Her announcement led to widespread speculation in the media about the interpreter, who won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her incarnation of Queen Elizabeth I in Passionate shakespeare in 1998, and who played M, the spy boss in several James Bond movies.

Despite his vision problems, Dench fans need not worry: he has stated that he has no plans to retire.

“This type of disease affects thousands and thousands of people around the world who have to deal with it. It is something that I have to learn to deal with and that I have to adapt to, but it does not lead to blindness,” Dench said in the release.

According to the British Health Service (NHS), almost a third of Britons over the age of 75 suffer from ocular degeneration. A painless disease that reduces central vision and keeps peripheral vision intact.

There are two forms of the disease: “dry”, which leaves people with blurred central vision, and “wet”, a more serious type that can cause blind spots.

Dench told the newspaper Daily Mirror that the disease had affected both eyes, although he received treatment and hoped to avoid further damage.

“I have wet degeneration in one eye and dry in the other and they had to do those grafts and I think it has stopped it. I hope so, ”Dench was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

“I can’t read scripts anymore because of the problem with my eyes. Someone comes and reads them to me, as if they were telling me a story, “he added.
