Antonio Banderas and Kate Bosworth are just a few of the world-famous actors who will be filming a movie in Thessaloniki, Greece in the coming days for a star-studded film whose name is still in progress.
Head of the National Center for Audiovisual Media (icom), Panos Kwanis, on the radio of the Macedonian News Agency and Athens about the upcoming production on Monday.
Flags in Thessaloniki
Greek authorities hope that a Hollywood production soon to be screened in Thessaloniki will usher in a new era of filming in the northern Greek city.
Kwanis spoke about the Banderas movie and explained that “many roads will be closed due to filming. For about a month everyone (movie stars and crew) will be in Thessaloniki.
“So the plan, if all goes well, is that more films can be shot in Thessaloniki in the coming months and before the end of the year,” he continued.
The production consisted of 300 actors and production team. However, the group will require local technicians and craftsmen from all disciplines. Overall, Kwanis assures that more than a thousand people will participate in the filming of Antonio Banderas’ new film in Thessaloniki this summer.
Kwanis explained how it was decided to shoot the film in Greece and noted that the producers are also considering other Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Spain and France. He also spoke about the competitive bidding process in which Kwanis and other top executives struggled to select Thessaloniki among other potential beautiful backgrounds.
Greece will become a photography hub
Up to eighteen international films will be shot in Greece in 2021, underscoring the industry’s demand for an almost infinite variety of landscapes and monuments in the country.
Greek Film Center director Venice Vergou recently said that projected revenue from foreign production in 2021 could reach 90 million euros ($ 106 million).
This foreign interest, he added, creates a “positive domino effect” that will help attract more production.
Hollywood blockbusters like “Knives Out 2,” starring Greek-Filipino actor Dave Bautista and “James Bond” Daniel Craig, will be shot in Greece this year.
A film about the life of Giannis Antetokounmpo entitled “Greek Freak” has just finished shooting in the center of Athens.
The biopic, produced by streaming service Disney +, shot scenes under the hot Athenian sun to accurately depict the city where Antetokounmpo grew up.
